When I talk about natural fibre flooring, I bet the first thing you think of is wool. This is awesome, however, what frequently happens is that the wool carpet has a synthetic underlay! Epic Fail!
Today I want to with you about alternatives, which not only look and feel amazing, they could also cut your budget dramatically. You may have heard of each of these, though unsure of the difference. If you are a client of mine, you will know that I am more than a little obsessed with natural fibres in the home.
Jute
This is the finest natural plant fibre available with a silky lustre. It is made from the long fibres of the jute plant, which are then treated and softened with water before the fibres are beaten out into long strands like rope. Best suited to less heavy traffic areas. Vacumn often and use dry-cleaning powder for a good clean.
Sisal
This fibre is made from the long leaf fibres of the Agave Sisalana. The fibres are particularly strong and can be made into cord and matting. It is hard wearing and suitable for all areas. It can be colour-dyed and woven into various patterns and textures. Clean with damp cloth and dry with hair dryer.
Coir
Coir is made from the husk of the fruit of the coconut palm found in many tropical countries. The dark-brown fibres are hard wearing and strong and are made into ropes and matting. Suitable for heavy traffic areas and is also water repellant. To clean, sponge with mildly soapy water.
Seagrass
Seagrass is the most popular natural floor covering and my all time favourite. It is naturally stain-resistant and can be used in any room, although not always suitable in wet areas. Generally an inexpensive option and looks incredible.
