Have you noticed that rather than focusing on the concrete aspects within the home, furniture, and accessories, we are targeting intangible things like light, air, and aroma. Today, we look at sound. Acoustics is often one of those things that gets missed when moving into a new home, or buying and decorating a new home.
What is acoustics?
In the simplest terms, acoustics is science that relates to the control, production, effects, and transmission of sound – as well as the process of hearing. As it relates to design, acoustics deals with the qualities of a space as it affects sounds.
Is acoustics really that important to consider?
Imagine this scenario: You’re sitting in your living room that you’ve recently decorated. It came out exactly the way you wanted it and you’re comfortable. Then something terrible happens – you learn that your TV has a harsh, offensive sound. It’s not pleasant – and it’s certainly not comfortable. Likewise, imagine being in an office conference room where voices echo and are amplified. This isn’t the best way to go about problem-solving and learning.
What needs to be considered?
The management of sound within your space is important and ideally should be considered from the very beginning. You’ll need to consider the height of your ceilings, size of the rooms and what you plan to do in the space. Most acoustic issues can be managed by appropriate floor coverings, window treatments, wall treatments and soft furnishings.
How does your home stack up?
Answer yes or no to the following.
1.When you walk across your floor with shoes on, there is an echo.
2. On watching the TV at night time, I can hear it bouncing off the walls.
3. I can hear my children snoring in the next room.
4. When there is a group of people talking in the living room, I find it hard to hear due to the echo.
5. If somebody pulls a dining chair out, I can hear it at the other end of the house.
